PECAN Seeks Action Against Sale Of Unregistered Pesticides

  The Pest Control Association of Nigeria(PECAN), on Wednesday  called on relevant agencies to take  measures against the sale of unregistered pesticides in the country. The PECAN National President, Mr Olakunle Williams,made the call at the” 2023 Mandatory Continuing Development Training Programme for Pesticides Handlers ” in Lagos. No fewer than 300 pesticides handlers participated in the programme . Williams said the training programme was to keep  participants  abreast of  latest developments  in pest management.  UNDP urges maritime stakeholders to improve efforts at combating rising incidence of piracy  Lagos, Nov.20, 2023 The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on Monday called on all maritime actors to step up efforts at combating piracy and all forms of crimes and criminalities in Gulf of Guinea (GoG) coastal areas. This wake up call was made by the UNDP Team Lead, Governance, Peace and Security, Mr Matthew Alao, at the inauguration of the Anti-Piracy and Prevention of Maritime Crimes Course 5/2023. The maritime crimes course is organised by the Martin Luther Agwai International Leadership and Peacekeeping Centre (MLAILPKC) in conjunction with the Government of Japan. It would hold from Nov. 20 to Dec. 4 at the Nigerian Army School of Finance and Administration (NASFA), Apapa, Lagos with participants from Ghana, Republic of Benin and Togo. Nigerian Navy intercepts 127 bags of narcotics  Nov. 19, 2023. The Commander Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT, Commodore Kolawole Oguntuga has said that the ships' Quick Respond Team have successfully intercepted 127 bags of substances suspected to be cannabis sativa at Eleko Beach, Lekki. Oguntuga said this in a statement signed by the ships'spokesperson, Sub.-Lt. Happiness Collins and made available to newsmen on Sunday. The commander said that on Nov.17, his team, acting on credible Intelligence, swiftly responded, leading to the confiscation of 113 bags of cannabis sativa at the beach. "The criminals, upon sighting the team, abandoned the narcotics and fled. "This commendable effort further extended along the Badagry route, resulting in the arrest of additional 14 bags," he said. Ex Eja Expression: Navy embarks on exercise to curb illegal fishing Lagos, Nov.19, 2023 The Western Naval Command Fourth Quarter Sea Exercise code named EX EJA EXPRESSION would help to combat Illegal Unregulated and Unreported Fishing (IUUF) and other maritime crimes in the GuIf of Guinea. The Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Western Naval Command, Rear Adm. Mustapha Hassan said that the exercise would include fleet manouvres and gunnery geared towards working up the ships in terms of war fighting. The exercise was flagged off on Saturday by the FOC, Western Naval Doctrine Command, Rear Adm. Habilla Zakaria. Hassan said that the name of the Ex was taken from both the Yoruba and English languages in which the first word "EJA" means fish in English. Nigerian Navy apprehends four stowaways onboard Container Vessel TEME Express

  The Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT patrol team on Monday has apprehended four individuals trying to illegally leave the country onboard Container Vessel TEME EXPRESS enroute Dubai. The ships' Commander, Commodore Kolawole Oguntuga told newsmen in Lagos that the Maritime Domain Awareness Facility, the Falcon Eye Alignment played a critical role in providing information that led to their apprehension.   Oguntuga identified the stowaways as: Ebi Agrive, 22, Lucky Amusu, 23, Goodness Edu, 28, and Micheal Daniel, 18 years old. "Tactical teams were dispatched to the vessel at Lagos Anchorage, sequel to receiving information from the Maritime Domain Awareness Facility.    "Upon arrival, the teams noticed movements inside the rudder compartment, consequently, the teams boarded the ship, located and extracted the four stowaways.   The Spanish Navy on Monday paid a courtesy visit to the Western Naval Command, aimed at strengthening maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea(GOG). The Spanish navy was received by the Flag Officer Commanding(FOC), Western Naval Command, Rear Adm. Mustapha Hassan in Apapa, Lagos. According to Hassan, he said the two countries have had a good history in terms of bilateral relations and maritime security. He added that the Spanish navy had been present during exercise obamgame which was geared at ensuring the waters were safe for legal activities. “Our two countries have had a history of cooperation in terms of maritime security. You have been present in obamgame express and  Spain is doing a good job towards ensuring global security. “We need to improve in a lot of areas on collaboration in terms of training and ship building and human interaction,” he said. Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development(SDGs), on Thursday ,said her office would establish an entrepreneurship skills centre at the Lagos State University, to equip students with entrepreneurship skills.
