NSCDC commences major reforms within private security industry of Nigeria for better security architecture

Lagos, Nov.29, 2023. The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps ( NSCDC ) has commenced major reforms, within the Private Security Industry of Nigeria in order to emplace a robust security architecture in the nation. 

The NSCDC, spokesperson, Lagos State Command, DSC Oluwaseun Abolurin said this in a statement signed on Tuesday.

The Private Security Industry Summit themed, "Redefining Security : The Evolving Role of Private Security in a Changing World," held on Nov.28 at the Civic Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos.

Abolurin said that this was in line with modern reforms and dynamic changes around the world, to ensure adequate, effective and efficient security of lives and property.

He said that the unprecedented efforts by the Corps was geared towards reforming, rejigging and repositioning private security in our dear nation.

"This is to meet up with international standard and further eradicate all the identified, new and alien security challenges bedeviling the nation," the spokesperson said.



Abolurin said that the Commandant General, NSCDC, Ahmed Abubakar Audi, affirmed that rejigging the law guiding the industry at the moment, accreditation of training centres, training and licensing of guards would soon commence.

"Audi asserted that government has reposed, confidence in the licensed private security practitioners in the nation.

"As such, there is a greater need, for them to justify such exclusive privilege, by not being motivated, by gains alone but service to humanity and the nation at large," Abolurin quoted Audi as saying.

He added that the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, also re - affirms the government's commitment towards ensuring the sector's success and progress.

"Tunji charged the Association of Licensed Private Security Practitioners of Nigeria (ALPSPN) to brace up for an industry that will give more than just providing guards for companies, pubic and private enterprises but one, where the companies themselves will contribute to the development of the national security of our dear nation.

"The minister cited examples of developed climes such as the U.S., Canada and Dubai where guards take their jobs as a professional career and  also make a good living from their endeavour. 

"Tunji opined that reforms are imminent and underway, to remodel the private security industry in Nigeria," Abolurin said.



The National President, ALPSPN, Dr Chris Adigwu appreciated the minister and the NSCDC as an excellent regulator of the industry, at the summit of the Association.
