Ikorodu Senior High School Wins Maiden Edition Of Inter-School Debate In Lagos

 

Ikorodu Senior High School on Thursday emerged winner of the maiden edition of an inter-school debate competition organised for public secondary schools in Ikorodu Division.

The competition was organised by Ikorodu Local Government in conjunction with Kadward and Associate(KA),an NGO.

NAN reports that Ayangburen High School emerged first runner-up while Elepe Community Senior High School emerged second runner-up at the Thursday’s grand finale.

The topic of the competition was: Okada ban on Lagos highways has done more harm than good to residents.

While some schools spoke in support of the ban ,others argued against it.

Speaking at the grand finale , Hon. Wasiu Ayodeji Adesina, Chairman, Ikorodu Local Government, said the council would do everything necessary to support students in the pursuit of their academic goals.

Adesina promised that his administration would ensure the sustenance of the debate competition to develop the communication skills of students and build their confidence.

He commended the coordinator of the NGO for partnering with the council to organise the competition.

“We haven’t changed our promise to support our students’ academic development towards a great future.

“I congratulate all our competitors especially the winners .I want to tell those who did not win today to work harder as tomorrow may be their turn,” he said.

Speaking earlier, Alhaji Adeyinka Kazeem, Director, Kardward and Associate, said the competition was organised to make the students more assertive and enable them to read more and do research about various topics and trending issues.

He said the NGO had moved from the era of giving only General Certificate of Exam (GCE) and universities admission forms to students, to organising debates to improve students’ communication skills.

Also speaking, Mr Gbolahan Ogunleye, candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC) for Ikorodu Constituency 1, for Lagos State House of Assembly, promised that he would do he his best for education if elected .

Ayomide Oguneye, a student of the winning school , Ikorodu High School, thanked his teachers and organisers of the debate for giving them the opportunity to participate in the contest and represent their school.

“The debate is also to build our self esteem, confidence and leadership skills,”he said.

reports that the winning school ,Ikorodu High School was given a cash prize of N500,000 ,a desktop computer and a laptop for winning the competition while the first runner- up ,Ayangburen High School got N400,000 cash ,a desktop computer and a laptop.

The second runner-up ,Elepe Community Senior High School got N200,000 ,a desktop and a laptop .
