NGO Launches TV Series To Sensitise Children On Financial Literacy

A Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Prudential Zenith, in collaboration with Junior Achievement (JA) Africa, has launched a television series, “Cha-Ching Money Show”, aimed at sensitising school children on financial responsibility.

Speaking at the launch of the show in Lagos,  the Chief Executive Officer, Prudential Zenith, Mr Chuks Igumbor, said it would assist the children in making wise financial decisions and instill sound financial habits to millions of them.

According to him, since 2016, JA has delivered Cha-Ching in Africa to over 13,000 young people in schools across Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Uganda and Zambia.

“In light of the ultimate goal, JA Africa and Prudence Foundation have partnered to bring the Cha-Ching programme  from the classroom to television.

“This will be through the Cha-Ching Money Show with Adanna and Emeka which builds on the Cha-Ching Cartoon series with wrap-around sessions with the hosts, Adanna and Emeka.

“Educating children on financial literacy is essential when forming reasonable money management practices and habits.

“That is why early financial literacy education is necessary for assisting kids to learn the value of money, how to set aside money for savings, and how to make wise financial decisions,” he said.

He added that children could use this information to their advantage as they get older and start taking care of their own finances.

“The Cha-Ching programme has been crucial in helping kids become financially smart, and we are pleased to support this initiative,” he said.

Earlier the CEO, JA Africa, Mrs Simi Nwogugu, said that JA students in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Uganda and Zambia learned a lot about earning, spending and saving money through the Cha-Ching programme.

“The COVID-19 pandemic caused a slow down in expansion of this program, so, we decided to come up with a way to expand this programme to as many students as possible using the television.

“The wrap-around content around the original videos helps to enhance learning and inspire young African children who see themselves reflected in the hosts.

“We are grateful to Prudence Foundation who have shown exemplary commitment to instilling financial literacy in african kids.

“Low participation rates in the financial system by young people ultimately hinders their ability to take personal actions such as saving towards financial security,” she said.

She said that the Cha-Ching Money Show with Adanna and Emeka would help children develop good financial habits.

She added that the series which would also be shown through local media would reach children in underserved communities.
