Lagos, March 27, 2024

The Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT on Tuesday handed over 193 bags of substance suspected to be cannabis sativa to the Nigerian Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

The Commander, Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT, Commodore Rafiu Oladejo while to speaking to newsmen at NNS BEECROFT base said that each bag weighed 38 kg.

Oladejo added that the items were arrested alongside one suspect, Mr Emmanuel Asamani, a 24 year old Ghanaian on March 16 off the Badagry coast by naval ships on patrol.

"It is necessary as part of the established procedures to hand over the items and the suspects to the appropriate government agencies.

"The arrest was made possible by the effective utilisation of the Falcon Eye Alignment system and the Regional Maritime Awareness Capability Centre in addition to our human intelligence.

"This effort is sequel to the need and the directive of the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) to maintain credible presence in line with the tenets of Operation Water Guard," the commodore said.

Oladejo said that the suspect, Asamani claimed not to know where he was ferrying the illicit items to but he was optimistic that the NDLEA would find out in due course during their investigation.

"The operators of the boat on sighting the naval patrol team, absconded leaving just one person on board who we found hiding in between the bags of the substance," he said.

The Commodore said that the consumption of illicit substances had a lot of dangers on human health and that it also led to a high propensity of crimes all over the world.

"The proceeds from the sale of these illicit substances are most times used to sponsor other forms of crimes within the maritime space and even on land.

"The CNS has directed that we do everything possible to ensure that the perpetrators of such crimes be brought to book," Oladejo said.

The Commander of Narcotics NDLEA Marine Command, Paul Ahom appreciated the leadership of NNS BEECROFT for taking the lead in policing crime and drug trafficking in Nigerian water ways.

"The navy is the leading agency in the interception of drugs among the maritime law enforcement agencies in Nigeria.

"They have provided an evidence based investigation for us and we are going to take the lead from there and see that we get to the root cause of the matter.

"We need to ascertain where the drug is coming from and to get to the syndicate that are behind the ferrying of these drugs from Ghana, Togo via Republic of Benin to the Nigerian water ways," Ahom said.
