Lagos, May 16, 2024

The French Naval Ship (FNS) BORDA paid a courtesy visit to the Western Naval Command on Wednesday to improve hydrography towards attaining the Blue Economy objectives in the country.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the blue economy seeks to promote economic growth, social inclusion, and the preservation of livelihoods while ensuring environmental sustainability.

It aims to decouple socioeconomic development from environmental degradation and optimise the benefits derived from marine resources.

The Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Western Naval Command, Rear Adm. Mustapha Hasan, said that FNS BORDA's visit would help Nigeria to expand her hydrographic horizon and improve cooperation with the French Navy.

"We are happy to receive the FNS BORDA which is a hydrographic Ship.

"We got news of our expanded maritime border by the United Nations (UN) a few days ago.

"This is falling in place with the visit of FNS BORDA because cooperating with our hydrographic partners helps us to enhance the navigability or our waters regarding the blue economy," the FOC said.

The Naval Attaché for the French Defence Mission in Nigeria, Cdr. William Tosten said their visit was in the framework of a very historical partnership with the Nigerian Navy around the domain of hydrography.

Tosten said that hydrography was important because it was one keystone for achieving the blue economy and that they were happy to maintain the link with Nigeria.

"We will be commencing training at sea on Thursday with the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) LANA and we are happy to engage in the training tomorrow," he said.
