Visionary leadership key to Africa’s development – Prof. Badejo

A Professor of Political Science, Prof. Femi Badejo, has urged African leaders to prioritise transformative development and visionary leadership to overcome external challenges and achieve progress.

Badejo, who works at Chrisland University, Abeokuta, made the call in a telephone interview.

Badejo, also a writer and  diplomat, recently received a life achievement recognition award from the Nelson Mandela Distinguished Africanist Award.

The award is given to Africans who has distinguished himself or herself in public leadership positions.

It is organised by the Award Committee of the Africa Annual Events and the University of Texas at Houston.

According to Badejo, leadership plays a crucial role in galvanising people toward development and mitigating  adverse impact of external impediments.

Badejo warned that the external environments posed significant threats to Africa, including the risk of re-enslavement and re-colonisation.

He said that this was driven by the desire to exploit the continent’s human and material resources.

Badejo, however, said that with effective leadership, Africa could overcome its challenges and achieve its developmental goals.

He  emphasised the importance of addressing corruption and upholding the rule of law.

“There is an inverse relationship between corruption and rule of law. The more of one, the less of the other,” he said.

Badejo called for focus on educating the younger generation about the importance of integrity, good character, civic-mindedness and hard work.

He said that, by prioritising the values and promoting visionary leadership, Africa could unlock its full potential and achieve sustainable development.

He said with visionary leadership and commitment to value-driven development, Africa would take its pride of place and regain its glory. (NAN)
