Engineer Sues Police For Alleged Threat To Life

An engineer, Mr Samuel Oladele, has filed a suit before an Ikeja High Court against alleged threat to his life by the police and some suspected land grabbers.

In the suit numbered ID/14897/MFHR/2023 and filed through his counsel, Mr Adetayo Bello, Oladele is praying the court to stop his alleged continued harassment and intimidation by the police.

The  inspector-general of police, Lagos State commissioner of police and DCP Sheik Danko are among the respondents in the fundamental enforcement rights suit.

Oladele is also praying the court to save him from activities of alleged land grabbers, Mr Sule Suraju and Taye Hassan, also respondents in the suit.

He alleged that Suraju and Hassan worked with Danko on a mission to  take over a land he lawfully acquired.

He averred that his alleged continued invitation, harassment, intimidation and coercion by the police at the instance of the alleged land grabbers were unlawful.

He said: “The respondents’ action is a clear violation of the applicant’s constitutional rights as protected under Sections 34(1), 35(1), (2), (3), (5} AND (6), 36 (1), 37, 40, 41 and 43 and articles 3 (2), (4), (5)  6, and 7(b) and (d) of the African Charter and People Right Ratification and Enforcement Act. Cap 10, Laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) and Orders 1  and 2 of the Fundamental Rights (Enforcement Procedure} Rules, 2009.”

He sought a court declaration that the crux of the dispute between him and the alleged land grabbers was a land matter, strictly civil in nature, and did not fall within the constitutional purview of cases and matters the police could adjudicate on and determine.

He equally sought an order that he was  entitled to respect for dignity of person, personal liberty and’ freedom from continued invitation, harassment, intimidation.

He also prayed the court to stop his alleged coercion to transfer to the fourth and  fifth respondents, the title of a large expanse of land situated on Samuel Oladele Ahmed Layout, 6th Avenue Extension on Kuje- Amuwo Family Land, off Lagos-Badagry Expressway, Amuwo Odofin Local Government.

A date has yet to be given for hearing of the suit.
