NAFOWA committed to members’ wellness — official

Lagos, May 19, 2024

The Nigerian Air Force Officers Wives Association (NAFOWA) restated its commitment to creating awareness on sustaining healthy mental and physical fitness for impactful activities in homes and the barracks.

NAFOWA’s Deputy Chairperson Gloria Uwakara made the observation in Lagos on Saturday during the association’s health walk and mental awareness campaign.

She noted that the purpose of the awareness campaign was to ensure that NAF personnel and their families remain healthy.

The theme of the awareness is: “Step by Step; Embracing Mental Wellness through Movement in the Barracks”.

Uwakara, who represented the NAFOWA Chairperson, Lagos Chapter, Mrs Aisha Abdullahi, said that the event was part of activities lined-up for the celebration of the 60th anniversary of NAF.

ReelzzNewzz24 reports that over 50 women including members of the Airmen Wives Association (AWA) participated in the event.

She added that the three-kilometre health walk would further drive home the point and make the home front and barracks a formidable space for positive growth.

"As we celebrate NAF @ 60, we are proud to embrace the theme "Step by Step; Embracing Mental Wellness through Movement".

"As we gather here today, we are not only promoting physical well-being but also acknowledging the importance of mental health.

"This theme resonates deeply with our values of supporting and empowering one another," she said.

Uwakara said that taking small steps towards mental wellness, would help create a significant impact on their overall health and happiness.

"As we all know, “Taking care of your mental health is an act of self-love."

"Today, we come together to raise awareness about mental health, reduce stigmatisation and encourage open conversations to help one another.

"Mental wellness is just as important as physical health, and we are therefore committed to supporting one another on this journey," she said.

Uwakara encouraged members to continue to support one another and take appropriate "Step by Step" measures, towards their mental well-being.

She thanked the Coordinator, NAF Residency Training Programme, Squadron Leader Rilwan Salami, for the insightful lecture he delivered on the benefits of mental health awareness to their members.

Uwakara appreciated the National President of NAFOWA, Mrs Rakiya Abubakar for all the support and guidance she gave to the Lagos State chapter.

Also, Mrs Oluwaseyi Adewole, Coordinator, AWA, Lagos chapter urged members to not take their health for granted and endeavor to go for regular check up in the hospital.

"We should also conduct regular check up for our children to ensure they are mentally and physically healthy because they are the future of tomorrow.

"We should be very observant and be able to tell when something is wrong with our husbands so as to take immediate action before the situation gets worse," Adewole said.

Mrs Oluwatosin Fadare, an AWA member, urged wives to encourage husbands to go for check up regularly so that they can diligently carry out duties assigned to them.

"Going to the hospital on a regular basis is necessary and we should not wait until we get sick before going to check our medical status.

"Our men particularly, don't like to go to the hospital for check up, so I implore us as wives, to ensure to encourage them to go to the hospital regularly for a check up," Fadare said.
