LASUED VC Advocates Increased Tree Tlanning To Address Global Warming

The Vice- Chancellor of Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), Otto/Ijanikin, Prof. Bidemi Lafiaji-Okuneye, has advocated increased tree planting  to address global warming.

Lafiaji-Okuneye said that tree planting would help to build resilience to climate change.

She made the assertion at the 2024 Lagos State Annual Tree Planting Campaign held at the university’s  main campus,  on  Sunday in Lagos.

She said that tree planting was critical to securing a promising future.

“Trees are essential to ecosystem in which we reside.  They also control climate change by moderating the effects of sun, rain and wind.

“Today, their value continues to increase, and more of their benefits are being discovered as their role expands to satisfy the needs created by our modern lifestyles.

“Studies have also shown that by spending quality time among trees and in green spaces, we reduce the amount of stress that we carry around with us in our daily lives.

“Lagos State tree planting exercise, which is taking place today, is an innovative practice of building an environmental legacy aimed at making tree planting and recreation  vital components of our urban life,” Lafiaji-Okuneye said.

According to her, the theme of the 2024 Lagos State Tree Planting Campaign is “Nourish Our Future”.

The vice-chancellor said that the theme demonstrated the state government’s desire to create a safe and environmentally-sustainable future.

“Therefore, we implore you all to be a part of this agenda by a simple act of planing a tree, nurturing it and ensuring that it survives.

“We strongly believe that internalising the practice can be our own way of responding to the United Nation’s call.

“The call is urging educational institutions to be catalyst of sustainability of the planet earth,” Lafiaji-Okuneye said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that many tree seedlings were planted within the university premises by its management staff and students.
