UBA Africa Day: UBA reaffirms commitment to growth and unity of Africa

Lagos, May 24, 2025

The General Managing Director, United Bank for Africa (UBA) Mr Oliver Alawuba has reaffirmed the banks commitment to the growth and unity of Africa while focusing on establishing branches in all 54 countries of the continent.

Alawuba made this commitment on Friday during UBA's Africa Day Celebration 2025 which took place at the UBA Headquarters, Victoria Island, Lagos State.

The director said that Africa was a beautiful continent with lots of potential while describing the day as one of the best days to be a member of the UBA family.

"It is a land with very beautiful women, very handsome and strong men. A land flowing with both material and human resources," he said.

Alawuba said that UBA had a deep-rooted belief in Africa’s potential and reiterated the bank’s commitment to driving the continent’s development.

“Today, Nigeria and all the 19 African countries where we have presence are showcasing Africa.

"Africa has the most beautiful culture, customs, food and everything. The best of the world is in Africa and the future of the world is in Africa," he said.

The director said that UBA currently served over 40 million Africans and 5 million non-Africans across 20 countries, with plans to expand into all 54 African nations.

“Our goal is to serve Africa, to develop Africa and make sure the whole world recognises Africa.

"Africa cannot grow unless the youth are empowered, and that is why UBA is committed to empowering the youths of Africa to take charge of the future," he said.

Alawuba urged African countries to seize emerging global opportunities, such as the ongoing tariff wars and the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to drive intra-African trade and innovation.

He said that Africa was abundant in resources, talents, and youthful population, with over 1.4 billion people and 60 percent under the age of 30.

"So, Africa is well-positioned to lead the future and the charge on this Africa Day is to ensure that Africa is developed for the people.” the director said.

Africa Day, established by the African Union, is observed annually to celebrate the continent’s unity, diversity, and developmental strides.

UBA has continued to use the occasion as a platform to unite Africans around the cause of economic growth, cultural pride, and regional cooperation.

The event drew participation from UBA staff, partners, and cultural performers across the bank’s African operations, making it a truly pan-African celebration.

The event, which showcased the diverse traditions, fashion, music, and cuisines of Africa.
