CDS advocates peace through golf tournament

Lagos, June 29, 2025

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Christopher Musa, has called for peace in Nigeria through the Golf Fore Peace Tournament.

He made the call on Saturday during the one-day tournament at Ikeja Golf Club, Lagos.

Represented by Maj.-Gen. Bolaji Salami (rtd.), the CDS said promoting love and unity across the country had become essential for national development.

ReelzzNewzz24 reports that the CDS Office has sponsored the Golf Fore Peace Tournament for two years as part of its peace advocacy.

Musa said the tournament aimed to unite golfers and promote peace in Nigeria while raising awareness on the importance of national unity.

“This is crucial due to the country’s security challenges. Golf, as a game of life, allows us to engage with nature.

“Nature abhors violence, so engaging with nature through golf promotes peace, which the game symbolises,” he added.

He expressed hope that the tournament would foster interaction and promote the ideals of ‘Golf Fore Peace’.

“I believe participants will spread the message of peace throughout Lagos and nearby communities after the tournament,” Musa stated.

Mr Abimbola Ajinibi, Chairman of the Planning Committee, said the goal is to hold tournaments nationwide to spread the peace message.

Ajinibi said their partnership with the military embraces a non-kinetic approach to tackling the nation’s security challenges.

“This is a platform where military and civilians collaborate to promote peace through non-violent means.

“Golf is a tool for peace because it unites people as they play together.

“When you play golf, you meet new people, and by the end, you become close friends,” Ajinibi said.

Mrs Kemi Otegbade, Coordinator of Golf Fore Peace, described golf as a game of love and unity.

“On the course, you play with three others, forming a four-person team known as a flight.

“After four hours of play, friendships are formed, contacts exchanged, and unity promoted,” she said.

Mrs Elizabeth Olotu, Secretary of Lagos State Golf Association, said the tournament was timely due to current stress levels.

She said promoting golf would improve both mental and physical health, helping reduce stress in society.
