Nija Open Taekwondo Tourney: Nigeria comes second, NA athletes embody strength

Team Nigeria wrapped up the Nija Open Taekwondo Tournament in style, snagging 3 Gold, 6 Silver, and 23 Bronze medals to claim second place overall.
The Nigerian Army (NA) also held their ground with a proud 5th place finish, proving once again that Nigeria was fast becoming a powerhouse in African martial arts.
This was contained in a statement signed on Saturday by the Acting Asst. Director, Army Public Relations, Directorate of Army Physical Training, Abuja, Capt. Joy Abah.
Nigeria hosted the tournament which held from Aug. 21 to Aug.22 at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.
The event drew elite fighters from across Africa including Egypt, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Algeria, and Tunisia, vying for international fighting licenses and continental glory.
The NA, represented by the Directorate of Army Physical Training (DAPT) made a powerful statement on and off the mat.
The NA Taekwondo team was led by Maj. Lucky Ogiemudia, NA Taekwondo Chairman, and the team competed for global ratings while embodying the discipline, resilience, and combat readiness that define military excellence.
Ogiemudia thanked the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede for his unwavering support to the development of sports in the army especially taekwondo.
“Taekwondo sharpens mental toughness and boosts combat readiness.
“This is our third event this year, and the COAS ensures we’re always battle-ready on the mat and in the field,” ogiemudia said.
Lance Corpl. Daniel Alexander, one of the standout competitors, credited taekwondo with enhancing his self-defense skills and professional discipline.
He expressed his gratitude to the COAS for championing initiatives that empower soldiers in and out of uniform.
The tournament wasn’t just about medals, it was a celebration of international camaraderie, military valor, and the unifying power of sports.
