Lagos Sports Commission Director-General, Mr Lekan Fatodu, has praised the Golf and Tour Charity Tournament for using sport to drive social progress in the country.

Fatodu said at the 13th Eko 2025 Dinner Award in Lagos on Saturday that the initiative showed “the power of sports in driving social change and social development”.

He thanked the organisers on behalf of the state government, saying their work extended beyond recreation and contributed to wider development efforts in Lagos and across Nigeria.

He said the event’s ability to attract “notable Nigerians across social strata” confirmed its importance and growing national relevance.

Fatodu noted that the group’s charity efforts aligned with the state’s THEMES+ agenda, especially on poverty reduction, inequality and sports development.

He said Lagos welcomed partnerships because “the state cannot do it alone”, adding that such organisations helped tackle deprivation and support vulnerable groups.

Flag Officer Commanding, Rear Adm. Abubakar Mustapha, said golf strengthened teamwork within the military, adding that the Navy was expanding access to the sport across its bases.

Mustapha said the initiative matched the vision of the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Adm. Idi Abbas, noting that it also encouraged officers to connect with surrounding communities.

He described the charity focus as “noble”, saying it promoted inclusion and reduced social vices by supporting people who might otherwise feel abandoned.

Tournament leader, AVM CE Aroriode (rtd), said the association, formed in 2021, united golfers with shared ideals and had toured several Nigerian and African cities.

Aroriode said the group supported orphanages and vulnerable groups during each tour and recently donated 100 bags of rice to widows in military barracks.

Overall winner, Maj.-Gen. Emmanuel Anaryu, urged emerging golfers to “play against the course, not individuals”, dedicating his victory to his Supply and Transport team.
