Convocation Coconut Breaking: LASU V-C Urges Alumni To Attract Development

Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, the Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo has urged the institution”s  alumni to use its goodwill to attract development to the university.

Olatunji-Bello said this was necessary in order to facilitate the attainment of strategic goals of the institution.

She made the plea at the 26th convocation coconut breaking festival organised by LASU alumni association on Monday, in Lagos.

The vice-chancellor said that alumni could bring great development through different means..

She said they could do so by facilitating the construction and provision of independent power plant, large lecture halls, provision of security gadgets, amongst others.

“It will also help to facilitate the goals within the remaining three years and few months left for this administration to become the best university in the West African sub-region.

“The alumni represents a significant and vocal constituency in the university community, supported by a network of former graduates, who are determined to raise the profile of the institution.

“They also participate actively in the institution’s developmental activities, helping to build and grow the university brand; providing mentoring, internships and career opportunities for young graduates,” Olatunji-Bello said.

The vice chanvellor said that the coconut breaking ceremony, an entrenched tradition and culture in the University, was symbolic.

“It symbolises prayer for the general wellbeing of LASU staff, students and Lagos State, it also  showcases the rich cultural heritage that is unique and promotes the unity, peace and development of the university.

“The use of coconut for prayer is rooted in the history of the state of aquatic splendor, since it abounds in all the nooks and crannies of the state.

“The coconut breaking promotes mutual understanding, cooperation and sense of oneness in the institution,” Olatunji-Bello said.

Maj-Gen. Cecil Esekhaigbe, the President, LASU alumni, represented by Prof. Bola Oyefolu of the Department of Computer, thanked LASU management and staff for the opportunity to celebrate the coconut breaking festival yearly.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that LASU coconut breaking festival is an integral part of the institution’s convocation ceremony.

It made its debut as a festival in 2009 in Lagos state.

NAN reports that coconut breaking is meant to celebrate coconut annually, in reminiscence of the first coconut plantation in Nigeria, established by the Roman Catholic Mission, on the Topo Island in Badagry, in 1876.
