LASU Don Calls For Resuscitation Of Refineries In Nigeria

Prof Samuel Odewumi, the immediate past Dean of the School of Transportation and Logistics, Lagos State University ,Ojo has called for the resuscitation, privatization, commercialization, selling or outsourcing the management of refineries in Nigeria.

Odewunmi made the assertion while delivering the lead paper in a virtual national roundtable discussion organised  by the Chartered Institute of Transport Administration of Nigeria (CIOTA) on Sunday ,Lagos.

Theme of the discussion was : “Fuel Subsidy Removal Conundrum: National Consensus on Removal but Cacophony on How To Achieve It”.

He said that the President’s inaugural statement of “Subsidy is gone” had changed the music and therefore the dance step must also change.

“So the conversations here will be more of how do we get out of the quagmire than lamentations on what went wrong.

“There  must be something on the table for labour, for them to drop demand for return to status quo ante on price.

“Government must earn labour trust by implementing whatever is agreed (No ASUU treatment).

“The team must embark on continuous talk until agreement is reached,” Odewunmi said.

The Don added that there would never be a good time to remove the subsidy, we must resolved to sort it out once and for all.

“Nigeria must get this subsidy monkey, that is sucking dry our revenue, off our back, we can not continue with this costly racket.

“I urge take notice of the massive disruption of the socio- economic activities of the country and consequent agony to be inflicted on the masses.

“Because ,its log of demands in substitute for price reversal and put govt leg to the fire on implementation

“There should also be an appointment of knowledgeable substantive minister of petroleum which is very important,” Odewunmi said.

Dr Boboye Oyeyemi, immediate Corps Marshal ,Federal Road Safety Corps suggested a diversified system of transportation wherein the rail system would  be improved.

Oyeyemi said that the conveyance of the petroleum products through the pipeline would come back for seamless and adequate supply.

Prof Innocent Ogwude, Chairman CIOTA and Deputy Vice-Chancellor,Nigeria Maritime University,Okerenkoko added that the subsidy should take care of price equalisation for the benefit of the end consumers of the product in Nigeria.
