Lagos lawmaker reaffirms commitment to inclusive governance

Mrs Omolara Oyekan-Olumegbon, lawmaker representing Lagos Island Constituency I, Lagos State House of Assembly, has reiterated her commitment to inclusive governance, focusing on welfare, infrastructure, and empowerment.

She gave the assurance during the 10th Constituency Stakeholders’ Meeting themed ‘Governance in Action: The Gains of the Renewed Hope Agenda’ held on Thursday.

Oyekan-Olumegbon used the occasion to present an account of her stewardship over the past two years.

She explained that her interventions were designed to directly impact residents, aligning with Federal Government programmes.

Her initiatives include a food hub, a back-to-school scheme, provision of GCE forms, cash support to widows, and several empowerment projects.

She also facilitated youth skills training, installed solar-powered streetlights, and established a technology hub with Assembly support.

“From the beginning, I pledged to create a food hub and a tech hub. With Assembly support, this commitment has become reality,” she said.

She added that 5,000 school bags would be distributed to pupils under her back-to-school programme.

“With available resources, I remain committed to ensuring my constituents receive the best possible support and opportunities,” she stated.

The lawmaker urged residents to embrace the ‘Renewed Hope Agenda’ in health, education, and infrastructure, stressing that it was designed to improve living conditions.

She encouraged indigent students to utilise the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), noting under-utilisation by South-West residents compared with counterparts from other regions.

She also appealed to residents to participate in the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration and obtain Permanent Voter Cards.

“We cannot afford to sit back. Everyone must join the process. Obtaining your voter card is the first step towards making your voice count,” she added.

Community leaders and residents praised her inclusive style of governance.

Mr Felix Eze, Igbo community leader, said Oyekan-Olumegbon had responded to challenges, particularly flooding and infrastructure.

“We know challenges exist, but she has represented us well before the state government, especially regarding flooding.

“She has also influenced construction works within the constituency. Indigenes and non-indigenes alike are beneficiaries of her efforts,” Eze added.

Similarly, Mr Ibrahim Katsina, Arewa community leader, described her governance as inclusive.

“Her style ensures that everyone benefits from her empowerment programmes, regardless of tribe. We are co-existing peacefully, and we thank the Federal Government too,” he said.

Mr Adele Taofiq, Deputy Director of Legislative Matters, Lagos State House of Assembly, also commended her performance.

“Our responsibility is to ensure governance remains impactful. We have seen how well she represents this constituency.

“She caters for everyone, irrespective of party or tribe. We will also convey residents’ comments and questions to the Assembly,” Taofiq assured.

The stakeholders’ meeting was attended by Tajudeen Olusi, Chairman, Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC).

Others are the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, represented by White Cap Chiefs; APC leaders, youths, market leaders, Persons with Disabilities, and community representatives.
